The administration and management of knowledge is consolidated as an asset and a measurement system for them. Understanding how knowledge is managed in this type of institution makes sense in substantive terms of teaching, research and university extension. The objective of this article is to carry out a systematic review of the knowledge management models used in Higher Education Institutions, to know which the main knowledge management models are used and to investigate if any of them contemplates the ability, attitude or personality of its employees within its structure. As a result, it is found that there are more universities that are concerned about the structure of knowledge in their organizations and that are committed to systematizing processes, especially Latin American institutions, which seek to increase their quality indices in relation to European universities. © 2022, Associacao Iberica de Sistemas e Tecnologias de Informacao.
